“Twelve Years a Slave” wins Best Picture: Oscars 2014

"Twelve Years A Slave" - Accenture Gala - Red Carpet Arrivals: 57th BFI London Film Festival The Steve McQueen film “Twelve Years a Slave” has won an Oscar for Best Picture. Although McQueen did not win a Best Director award (that honor was given to Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron), the Best Picture win is an honor nonetheless.

Will Smith presented the award for Best Picture as the ceremony ran overtime on Sunday night, surpassing its expected 8:30pm PST end-time. When he looked at the card to announce the Best Picture winner, he looked notably happy at the results.

Brad Pitt, a Producer for the film, said that, “One man brought us all here tonight to tell Soloman’s story, and that is the indomitable Steve McQueen.” McQueen returned the compliment, thanking Pitt and saying that without him “this film wouldn’t have been made.” McQueen was noticeably overcome with emotion, thanking the women in his life and admitting, “I have all these women in my life and they’re all the most powerful.”

McQueen ended his thank-you speech by noting the source of his success. He said, “Everyone deserves not to survive, but to live. I dedicate this film to all the people who have endured slavery.”
